Sixteen is the whole list and it is not shorthand for the capital. Leaks and burst pipes
Leak work starts by locating the water. A thermal camera shows where an escape has changed the surface temperature of plaster or screed. A correlator listens at two points on a buried metal pipe and computes the position between them. Tracer gas goes into a pipe that has first been drained, and is then detected where it surfaces. The position is marked and photographed before any repair is priced. A burst on the rising main is attended as an emergency, because water under mains pressure does not stop until a valve closes.
Drains and blockages
Drain work ends with a camera rather than with a cleared pipe. How do I book an engineer?

The description matters more than its length. Naming the fitting, the room and whether water is currently escaping lets the engineer load the right parts before setting off, which is what turns a two-visit job into one. A photograph attached to the form does the same work faster than a paragraph.
Before any of that, one question decides how bad the next hour gets: can you find your stopcock? Every household has one, most people meet it for the first time during a flood, and the search costs the minutes the water is using.
Where is the stopcock, and when should you close it?
The internal stopcock isolates the whole property’s cold supply, and it sits under the kitchen sink in most London homes. Close it clockwise the moment water appears and cannot be traced. Closing it stops the supply; it does not empty pipes already full.
- Look under the kitchen sink first, at the back, behind the waste trap.
- Check the second commonest positions next: a downstairs cloakroom, the airing cupboard, a hallway floor hatch, or under the stairs.
- Turn the handle clockwise until it stops, then open the cold kitchen tap to prove the flow has died away.
- Open the remaining cold taps to drain the pipework down, because a full pipe keeps discharging after the valve closes.
Two further points decide what happens after the valve shuts. A gravity-fed property stores cold water in a loft tank, and that tank keeps feeding the taps and the cylinder for several minutes after the stopcock closes. A stopcock that will not turn is a fault in its own right and is attended as an emergency, because the property has no way to isolate itself.
Why does London plumbing fail the way it does?
Three conditions specific to the capital drive most of the fault load, and each produces a different failure.
